The Rover 8HP, designed by Edmund Lewis, represented a key moment in the development of the automobile. Lewis created world first: steel backbone frame comprising the crankcase, gearbox housing, prop shaft, and integrated rear axle. A foot pedal allowed the engine's natural compression to assist the car in braking. Two the three seat configuration went on sale to the public on Dec 1, 1904, for the relatively modest price of $314 USD. It proved an instant success.
